Model 1240 Pulse Generator

Model 1240 – Combination Ultra-High Speed and Very High Speed Reference Pulse Generator

The Model 1240 provides two outputs, one is similar to the Model 1150 and was designed to provide pulses suitable to calibrate oscilloscopes with up to 50 GHz bandwidth.  It provides both a short positive and negative-going transition duration (typical risetimes are 10 ps and typical falltimes are 9 ps).  It exhibits a low short term settling error of less than 1 % in 10 nanoseconds.  The output switches between -600 mV and 0 V and the 600 mV pulse amplitude exercises the inputs of common sampling oscilloscopes by supplying a pulse that is up to 75 % of the operating input range of the oscilloscope.  (Option 1: the output switches between 0 V and +600 mV.)

The pulse head is attached to the mainframe by a 3 foot long cable pair that allows the pulse head output to be connected directly to the oscilloscope input without any intervening cables that can slow the pulse transition.  The output connector is a male 1.85 mm coaxial connector designed to mate with most ultra-high speed oscilloscope inputs without an adapter.

A second pulse output is similar to the Model 1120 and provides output pulses suitable for use with lower bandwidth oscilloscopes (bandwidths less than 20 GHz).  The transition duration of this secondary pulse output is typically 24 ps for the negative-going transition (falltime) and 18 ps for the positive-going transition (risetime).  The output connector is a male 2.92 mm coaxial connector.

The mainframe includes an internal 100 MHz trigger source and also accepts an external trigger from either a pulse or sine wave source.  Either trigger source is conditioned to provide the trigger input to the oscilloscope.  (Option 2: different internal oscillator frequency.)
